My fascination with photography all started in January of 2007, when my wife (Sweetpea) and I moved here from Mt. Holly, NC (just on the other side of Charlotte). We decided to relocate when I saw that there was not going to be any more textile industry for me to work in. We weighed the odds; beach or mountains? As you can tell, the beach won! We’re not just talking any beach! Oak Island is now the place we love to call home.
At that time, I had a SONY Cyber Shot 4mp camera that was only used for birthdays, Christmas and special times like that. When I moved to this beautiful beach, it was almost like I couldn’t take enough pictures! At first, it was sunsets. Then came the beach, followed quickly by the pelicans (my favorite)! By December of 2007, I had to give my pictures their own space on our computer. I had taken more than 2000 photos during this time.
I began getting some of them printed to show friends at the Hampton Inn, where I work. My friends and coworkers encouraged me to do something with all of these great snapshots. I approached Dave Cooper at the Ocean Crest Pier about using my photographs. He was very supportive, and agreed that they would make great postcards. I am currently saving funds to jumpstart my own little business, but for now, it will remain a hobby which I enjoy very much.
I consider myself lucky that my hobby ties in closely with my work. When I’m not busy taking my own pictures, I take pictures for the Hampton Inn Southport web site. The website is a great way to showcase our beautiful area. I also take pictures for the Ocean Crest Pier website too, show people what’s biting and how the fishing tournaments went. I currently use a Canon Rebel XTi for much of this work and have a lot of fun learning all of the digital settings. If you see a guy wondering aimlessly around Oak Island or Southport, with a camera strapped to his neck, it will probably be me, looking for more sunsets and pelicans!
