The Oak Island Senior Citizens’ Center will host its 7th Annual Chinese Auction on Saturday, June 6th, from 5:30 to 10:00 PM, at the Moose Lodge, 4239 Long Beach Road, Southport. Admission is $3, which includes dessert. Auction and Raffle tickets may be purchased at the door. Drawing for Auction items will begin at 8:00 PM, raffle drawing will follow. Many, many door prizes will be given out throughout the evening. Hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks may be purchased from the Moose Lodge. For further information, call the Senior Center at 278-5224.
The Oak Island Senior Citizens group operates craft workshops, teaches computer lessons and has a craft store at 5918 E. Oak Island Drive. All proceeds from the Chinese Auction will be used to support the Oak Island Senior Citizens Center. This is our largest fund raiser of the year.

Brunswick County residents are excited and proud to have the world’s third SciDome HD Digital Sky Theater recently installed at Ingram Planetarium. Surely it is at the forefront of science education for Brunswick County and educators are already scheduling next year’s field trips, but the SciDome HD Digital Sky Theater is simply great family fun! Whether you are a tourist or a local resident, gather your family and friends and check out the exciting programs. Last week’s preview parties and the grand opening were a tremendous success as attendees enjoyed the new exhibits in the Paul Dennis Science Hall, the colorful lasers, and the all new Sky Theater shows. Ingram Planetarium always ranks high on the list in this area for family fun and enjoyable educational venues.
The Planetarium’s summer schedule runs Tuesdays through Saturdays from May 26-September 5. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. with shows on the hour from 1-4 p.m. Shows are for all ages except as noted. At 1 p.m., it’s Zula Patrol: Under the Weather. Learn about weather on earth and across the solar system. This is the best show for young children. At 2 p.m., voyage through the solar system and deep into the universe in search of water with Oasis in Space. At 3 p.m. Seven Wonders turns back time to witness the seven ancient wonders of the world and then journeys through space to see seven cosmic wonders as never seen before. At 4 p.m. Fly into the Sky takes a sky tour to leave earth and visit the night sky wonders. This show is best for ages 9 and up. On Wednesdays only, a sea turtle program is included with the 4 p.m. Fly into the Sky program.
Laser music programs return from June 18 through August 21 on Thursdays and Fridays only. The Thursdays laser music show schedule is Laser Beatles at 5 p.m., Laser Vinyl at 6 p.m. and Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon at 7 p.m. Friday shows include Laser Zeppelin at 5 p.m., Laser Metallica (not appropriate for young children) at 6 p.m. and Pink Floyd: The Wall (not appropriate for young children) at 7 p.m. Laser music programs are like rock concerts without the band and they are LOUD!
The Planetarium is located at 7625 High Market Street in Sunset Beach. The Planetarium has great star shows, laser music shows, telescope viewing & sky events about astronomy, science, and space exploration. Programs and schedules change seasonally. The SciDome HD Digital Sky Theater simulates a perfectly dark, starry night and it is unsafe to move around during the shows. Late arrivals are not admitted to the theater. Admission per show is $8 Adult, $6 Senior Adult age 60 & up, $6 Students K-12 & College ID, and $4 for children ages 3-5. Groups should call for reservations and instructions. Summer hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays until September 5 from 12:30-4 p.m. for Sky Theater shows Summer laser shows run from June 18-August 21 on Thursdays and Fridays only from 5-7 p.m..

The Coastal Land Trust has protected more than 30 stream miles on Town Creek and on Saturday, May 30th you have the opportunity to see some of this protected land by joining the Adventure Company on a paddle of Rice Creek, a tributary of Town Creek . The Adventure Company will be meeting at 8:30 am at the Exxon Station on Hwy 17 and Hwy 87. The tour fee is $45 per person for kayak and gear. If you bring your own kayak and gear the rate is reduced to $25 for a single kayak and $40 for a double. $5 of the tour fee will be donated to the Coastal Land Trust.
The Coastal Land Trust protected its first tract on the Waccamaw River last year so we’re excited to offer another opportunity to explore this pristine inland environment. The experienced guides at The Adventure Company will lead participants on this river that winds through scenic bottomland hardwood forest and mature cypress-gum swamp.The Adventure Company will be hosting a trip to the Waccamaw River on Saturday, June 27th. They will be meeting at 8:00 am at the welcome center on Hwy 17 and Hwy 130. The tour fee is $50 or bring your own kayak and gear and the rate drops to $25 for a single kayak and $40 for a double. $5 of the partic ipant tour fee will be donated to the Coastal Land Trust.

Over two dozen artists will share the stage in Battleship Park with the North Carolina Symphony in BB&T Blue Skies and Golden Sands, a celebration of the coastal Carolinas that began with Blue Skies and Red Earth in the fall of 2006. The all-star cast includes Legends of Beach, a band comprised of five former members of the Embers.
Concert admission is FREE. Limited parking at the Battleship and water taxi shuttle from downtown will be available for a fee.
